  • 1. Since 1949, Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru & Shri Baldev Singh first issued their messages of encouragement & support towards our Armed Forces. Each year December 07 is observed as Armed Forces Flag Day. This solemn day brings to forefront our obligation towards disabled comrades in arms, widows and dependents of the martyrs. The “ Armed Forces Flag Day’ is, therefore, an opportunity for all of us to express our patriotism and be associated with this noble cause.
                                                                                                
  • 2. During the course of achieving victories, in the various wars the nation fought and also in combating the ongoing cross-border terrorism and insurgency, our Armed Forces have lost and continue to lose valuable lives as well as leaving quite a few disabled. The Armed Forces personnel are doing their duty selflessly for the nation. The trauma that the family suffers on demise of the head of the family is heartrending. Those of our men who are disabled require care and rehabilitation so that they do not become a burden on their family and instead lead a life of dignity. Those ex-servicemen who suffer from serious diseases such as Cancer, Heart ailments and Joint replacement etc, cannot afford the high cost of treatment.
                                                                                                
  • 3. The requirement of keeping our Armed Forces young necessitates the release of our service personnel at 35-40 years of age when they are still young, physically fit and have qualities of discipline drive and leadership. Every year about 60000 Defence Personnel are compulsorily retired and therefore, it becomes the national responsibility to resettle them so that they could shoulder the responsibility of their young family.
                                                                                                
  • 4. Many brave and gallant heroes from the Armed forces have laid down their lives in the service of the country. Ongoing counter insurgency operations and OP Vijay in Kargil have also left many broken homes without a bread winner. Flag Day brings to the fore front our obligation of looking after our disable comrade in arms , widows and dependents of those who have sacrificed their lives for the country.
                                                                                                
  • 5. It is for these reasons and to honour the Armed Forces that we observe the Flag Day. It is on this day the service rendered by personnel of Army, Navy and Air Force are remembered. The citizens by and large commiserate with the widows and the disabled. It is the collective duty of every citizen of our country to ensure rehabilitation and welfare of the dependents of our brave martyrs and disabled personnel. The flag day is one such occasion which gives us an opportunity to contribute most generously to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund. This is the method of displaying that we care for the sentinels of our motherland and support the widows and the disabled.
                                                                                                
  • 6. For the above reasons, the Defence Committee of the cabinet in 1949 decided that the flag day henceforth will be observed on 07 Dec each year throughout the country . Armed Forces Flag Day is hence observed every year on 07th Dec. On this day the nation and its citizenry reinforce their solidarity and express their gratitude and appreciation.
                                                                                                
  • 7. A concerted efforts is made on this day to raise collections from the public. The significance of the day is brought home through electronic and print media. In some places, Armed Forces formation and units also arrange variety shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programmes. Token Flags and Car Flags in red, deep blue and light colours, representing the three Services are distributed to the public throughout the country by the Kendriya Sainik Board.
